Fishing Takes Off at Elephant Butte Lake

May 13th, 2007

Somebody flipped the fish switch to “on.” At least, that’s how it seems to many people fishing at Elephant Butte Lake. You can probably ignore the usual tales of 400 lb Catfish by the Dam, but stories of catching over a dozen fish in under 30 minutes are factual. Really.

One excited group stopped into a marina bait store to purchase 2 stringers to store their catch. It’s not that they forgot theirs, they didn’t even own a stringer. They were just passing through and thought they would try fishing–without expecting to actually catch something!

As the above story illustrates, the results can be surprising at times. Seasoned pros will search near and far in fancy bass boats and show up with empty nets whilst a family fishing from the shore will reach their limit.

The most common fish being caught are White Bass, a small ( 2-4 lb) but aggressive white colored bass with a series of black stripes running horizontally along each side. Other catches being reported include walleye and stripers.

FISHING TIP: Reports indicate that white is HOT, specifically, white sashy shad and white Model A Bombers. Live bait is also being used successfully.
